2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Mods — My Full Build List and Honest Reviews

By Trail Tested TX | Houston, TX

I’ve been building my 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon for a while now and these mods have transformed it from a stock trail rig into a purpose-built machine. If you’re researching 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon mods and want a real-world opinion from someone who actually wheels — not a desk review — you’re in the right place.

Every single upgrade on this page has been installed on my actual Rubicon and tested on real Texas trails. Hill Country rock crawling, East Texas mud, and thousands of miles flat towed behind my RV. Here’s what I’ve done, what I spent, and whether it was worth it.

Warn Zeon 10 Winch + Synthetic Rope Upgrade

If you wheel alone — and sometimes I do — a winch isn’t optional. It’s life insurance. I went with the Warn Zeon 10 and haven’t looked back.

The Zeon is Warn’s premium flagship series — built tougher, engineered better, and designed for wheelers who actually put their recovery gear to work. At 10,000 lbs of pulling capacity it’s more than enough for a JL Wrangler Rubicon in almost any situation you’ll encounter on Texas trails.

The Zeon 10 comes stock with steel cable from the factory. I ran it that way for a while before making the switch to synthetic rope — and that upgrade deserves its own mention.

Steel rope vs. synthetic rope — my honest take:

  • Safety — Steel cable stores enormous energy under tension. If it snaps it becomes a dangerous projectile. Synthetic rope drops to the ground immediately when it breaks — dramatically safer for everyone near the recovery
  • Weight — Synthetic rope is significantly lighter, which matters hanging off your front bumper
  • Hand friendly — No steel burrs or frayed wires tearing up your gloves when feeding rope back onto the spool
  • Performance — Synthetic rope floats in water crossings and doesn’t kink or coil with memory the way steel cable does

Note: If you want synthetic rope from day one, look at the Warn Zeon 10-S — it comes with synthetic rope straight from the factory. I already owned the Zeon 10 when I made the switch so I did the upgrade separately, but if you’re buying new the 10-S saves you the hassle.

What I like about the Zeon 10:

  • Premium build quality — Warn’s flagship line, not a budget option
  • Wireless remote works reliably even with gloves on
  • Clean spool and smooth line lay
  • Waterproof rating holds up in creek crossings
  • Pulls strong and consistent under load

Verdict: The Warn Zeon 10 is a buy-once-cry-once winch. If you’re serious about wheeling your Rubicon don’t cheap out on recovery gear. And if you’re running steel cable — do yourself a favor and upgrade to synthetic rope. It’s one of the best safety upgrades you can make for the money.

Metalcloak 2.5″ Gamechanger Lift Kit

This is the crown jewel of my 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon build and the upgrade I get asked about most at the trailhead.

The Metalcloak Gamechanger isn’t a budget lift — it’s a purpose-built suspension system designed specifically for the JL Wrangler platform. At 2.5 inches of lift it gives you meaningful clearance without pushing into the territory where you need a ton of additional modifications to compensate.

What separates it from a standard coil spacer lift is the geometry correction built into the system. Most budget lifts just push the suspension up and call it a day — the Gamechanger actually corrects the caster angles and control arm geometry so your Rubicon drives better lifted than it did stock.

On the trail: The articulation improvement is immediately noticeable. Rocks that used to require more momentum now get walked over cleanly. The added clearance means I’m not sweating approach and departure angles on moderate trails.

On the street: This is where cheap lifts fall apart and the Gamechanger shines. On-road manners are excellent — no death wobble, no wandering, tracks straight at highway speeds.

Verdict: If you’re going to lift your JL Rubicon, do it right the first time. The Metalcloak Gamechanger costs more than budget options but you won’t be replacing it in two years.

Fox Remote Reservoir Shocks — Tuned by Accutune Off Road

Pairing the Metalcloak lift with Fox Remote Reservoir shocks tuned by Accutune Off Road was one of the best decisions I made on this build.

Here’s the thing about aftermarket shocks — the shock itself is only half the equation. How it’s tuned for your specific vehicle, weight, and use case is the other half. That’s where Accutune comes in.

Accutune Off Road specializes in custom valving Fox shocks for specific applications. I gave them my build specs — lift height, tire size, how I use the Jeep — and they tuned the shocks to match. The result is a setup that performs well both crawling at low speed on rocks and driving highway miles to the trail.

Before vs. after: The difference between stock Rubicon shocks and these tuned Fox units is significant. Body roll is reduced, trail feel is more connected, and big hits that used to jar the whole Jeep now get absorbed properly.

Verdict: Don’t skip the tuning. A properly tuned shock outperforms a more expensive shock set up wrong for your application. The Accutune custom tune is worth every penny.

Rock Jock Tow Bar Mounting Kit + Ready Brute Elite 2 Complete Tow Bar Kit

I tow my Rubicon flat behind my RV — four wheels down — and this combination makes it completely seamless.

Flat towing a Wrangler is one of the great advantages of the platform. The transfer case allows all four wheels to roll freely so you don’t need a dolly or trailer. But you need the right tow bar setup to do it safely and reliably.

Rock Jock Tow Bar Mounting Kit: The Rock Jock mount gives you a solid, purpose-built attachment point on the Rubicon’s frame. No sketchy DIY solutions — this is a proper engineered mount that takes the tow bar loads correctly and doesn’t compromise your front end.

Ready Brute Elite 2 Complete Tow Bar Kit: The Ready Brute Elite 2 is a self-aligning tow bar that makes hitching up solo a realistic option. The arms swing out, you back the RV up, and the system self-aligns and locks. For someone doing this alone it’s a massive quality of life upgrade over older rigid tow bar designs.

The complete kit includes the tow bar, safety cables, wiring harness, and baseplate hardware — everything you need to get rolling.

Verdict: If you’re an RV owner who also wheels, flat towing your Rubicon is the move. This combination is reliable, repeatable, and solo-friendly. I’ve flat towed thousands of miles behind my RV without a single issue.

Jeep JL Tazer Programmer

The Jeep JL Tazer is the one mod on this list I wish came from the factory. It’s a small plug-in device that unlocks a surprising amount of functionality that Jeep locked out of the JL for no apparent reason.

What it unlocks:

  • Auto start/stop disable — permanently, not every single time you start the Jeep
  • Sway bar disconnect at higher speeds
  • Customizable ambient lighting
  • Fog lights on with high beams
  • Video in motion for the Uconnect screen
  • Tire size and gear ratio recalibration for your speedometer
  • And a lot more depending on your trim level

The install takes about 10 minutes and requires zero mechanical ability — it plugs into your OBD port under the dash.

Verdict: At its price point the Tazer delivers more quality of life improvements per dollar than almost any other mod on this list. The permanent auto start/stop disable alone is worth the price of admission. If you own a JL Rubicon and don’t have one — stop what you’re doing.

What’s Coming Next on This Build

Two mods are at the top of my list right now:

Rock Slide Engineering Gen 3 Step Sliders Rock Slide Engineering makes some of the most functional sliders on the market — they double as a step which makes getting in and out of a lifted Jeep far more civilized, and they’re built to actually protect the rocker panels when things get sideways on a trail. Full review coming once they’re installed.

On Board Air A proper on-board air system is on my radar for airing back up after trail runs. Currently using a portable unit which works but takes forever. Full setup and install review coming when I pull the trigger.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Metalcloak 2.5″ Gamechanger worth the money over a budget lift? Yes — without hesitation. Budget coil spacer lifts just push your suspension up without correcting the geometry. The Gamechanger fixes caster angles and control arm positions so the Jeep actually drives better lifted than stock. On-road manners, trail articulation, and long-term durability all improve. Buy it once and be done.

Warn Zeon 10 vs Zeon 10-S — which should I buy? If you’re buying new, get the Zeon 10-S — it comes with synthetic rope from the factory and saves you the cost and hassle of upgrading later. I bought the Zeon 10 and upgraded to synthetic separately. Both winches are identical mechanically — the only difference is the rope. Synthetic is safer, lighter, and easier to handle.

Can you flat tow a 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon behind an RV? Yes — the JL Wrangler is one of the best flat tow vehicles available. Put the transfer case in neutral, shift the transmission to park, and all four wheels roll freely. You’ll need a proper baseplate, tow bar, safety cables, and wiring harness. I use the Rock Jock mounting kit and Ready Brute Elite 2 tow bar — both are solid and the combo is very solo-friendly.

Does the Jeep JL Tazer void your warranty? This is a common concern. The Tazer plugs into your OBD port and doesn’t flash or modify the ECU — it intercepts signals to enable locked-out features. Most dealers won’t know it’s installed. That said, if you’re concerned about warranty coverage, consult your dealer before installing any programmer.

The Bottom Line

The 2022 JL Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon is already an exceptional platform from the factory. The mods on this list take it from exceptional to purpose-built — a rig that’s equally comfortable crawling rocks in the Hill Country, running mud in East Texas, and flat towing behind an RV to get to the next adventure.
