Offroad Tire Pressure Guide — What PSI Should You Run? (Plus the Chalk Test)

Getting your offroad tire pressure right is one of the most important — and most overlooked — variables in offroad performance. Get it right and your Jeep or SxS transforms on the trail. Get it wrong and you’re either spinning uselessly in mud, bouncing off rocks, or running down the highway on tires that are quietly wearing out unevenly.

I run a 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon Xtreme Recon on 37″ Nitto Trail Grapplers and a 2022 Polaris RZR Pro XP4 Ultimate on 36″ ITP Cryptids. When Discount Tire installed my Trail Grapplers they inflated them to 37 PSI — standard practice based on the door jamb spec. Spoiler: that’s probably not the right pressure for a lifted Jeep on 37s. The chalk test I’m doing this weekend will prove it. Both rigs see real Texas trail miles — rocks, mud, and everything in between. Here’s exactly what I run and why.


Why Tire Pressure Matters More Than You Think

Your tire is the only thing connecting your rig to the ground. Everything else — suspension, lockers, horsepower — works through that contact patch. Tire pressure determines the size and shape of that contact patch, which affects:

  • Traction — lower pressure = larger footprint = more grip on loose terrain
  • Ride quality — lower pressure absorbs impacts better on rough ground
  • Tire wear — wrong pressure wears tires unevenly and costs you money
  • Fuel economy — underinflated tires on the street increase rolling resistance
  • Bead security — go too low without beadlocks and you risk unseating the tire

Understanding this one variable will immediately make you a better wheeler — and save you money on tires in the long run.


Street vs. Trail — Why You Need Two Different Pressures

Street pressure is about efficiency, wear, and safety at highway speeds. Your tires are designed to run at a specific pressure to maintain proper contact patch geometry on pavement. Too low and the edges wear faster. Too high and the center wears faster. Neither is good.

Trail pressure is about maximizing grip on the specific terrain you’re running. You’re going slow, so heat buildup isn’t an issue. What matters is footprint — how much rubber is in contact with the rocks, mud, or sand beneath you.

The difference between your street pressure and your trail pressure is significant — and that’s exactly why every serious wheeler carries a way to air down AND air back up.

Notes on my setup: The factory XR Recon beadlock capable wheels on the Rubicon give me confidence running lower pressures — the wheel design handles low PSI better than standard wheels. At 12 PSI on rocks the Trail Grappler flexes and wraps beautifully, dramatically increasing the contact patch on uneven surfaces.

On the street at 30 PSI the 37s ride well without being harsh. I’ve found anything above 32 PSI starts to feel bouncy on Texas highways.

Notes on my setup: The Pro XP4 with 6″ Super ATV portals sits significantly higher than stock which changes the dynamics somewhat. At 12 PSI the ITP Cryptids perform excellently in mud — the aggressive tread pattern clears well even at lower pressures. I haven’t run it on sand dunes yet but will update this when I do.


The Chalk Test — Find Your Perfect Street Pressure

This is one of the most useful things you can do for your tires — and almost nobody does it. The chalk test tells you whether your street tire pressure is correct for your specific vehicle, weight, and tire combination.

Why manufacturer specs aren’t always perfect: The recommended tire pressure on your door jamb is a starting point — it’s calculated for a stock vehicle at stock weight. Once you add a lift, bigger tires, a winch, bumpers, and gear, your vehicle weight and tire size have changed. Your ideal street pressure may be different from what the sticker says.

How to Do the Chalk Test

What you need:

  • Sidewalk chalk (any color)
  • A flat, dry parking lot or driveway
  • Your rig at its normal loaded weight (gear, fuel, etc.)

Step 1 — Start at your current street pressure Note what PSI you’re running before you start. When I had my 37″ Nitto Trail Grapplers installed at Discount Tire they inflated them to 37 PSI — their standard practice based on the door jamb spec. That may or may not be right for your specific modified setup. The chalk test will tell you for sure.

Step 2 — Mark your tires Draw a thick chalk line across the full tread width of each tire — across all the lugs from one sidewall to the other.

Step 3 — Drive forward slowly Pull straight forward about one full tire revolution — 10-15 feet. Don’t turn, don’t brake hard, just roll straight.

Step 4 — Check the chalk pattern

Step 5 — Adjust and repeat Make small adjustments (2-3 PSI at a time) and repeat until the chalk wears evenly across the full tread width. That’s your ideal street pressure for your specific setup.

Airing Down — Equipment That Makes It Easy

Airing down manually with a gauge and valve core tool works — but it’s slow. Here’s what actually makes airing down fast and painless:

Automatic deflators — screw these onto your valve stems, set your target PSI, and they stop automatically when you hit it. Set all four corners, walk around and check your gear, come back to perfectly aired down tires.

Airing Back Up — Don’t Get Stranded

This is the part people forget until they’re at the trailhead ready to get back on the highway. Always have a way to air back up.

Options ranked by speed and convenience:

1. Onboard air compressor (best — coming soon) Permanently mounted, runs off your vehicle’s power, fastest option. I’m actively researching which onboard air system to add to my Rubicon — full review and install coming once I pull the trigger. Subscribe to get notified.

2. Portable 20V battery compressor (current setup) I run the DEWALT Tire Inflator Portable Air Compressor 20V MAX on both the Rubicon and the Pro XP4 right now. It’s fast, reliable, and the 20V MAX battery platform means I can swap batteries from my other DEWALT tools. I carry an extra charged battery and a charger in the RV so I’m never stuck waiting for a single battery to recharge at the trailhead.

It’s not as fast as onboard air but for where I am in the build right now it gets the job done without a permanent install commitment.

3. CO2 tank Fastest option for quick top-ups but limited capacity. Great for emergencies but not a full airing-up solution for 37s or 36s.

Important: These are starting points — always adjust based on your specific tire, vehicle weight, and terrain. The chalk test is the only way to know your ideal street pressure for your exact setup.


Things to Know Before You Air Down

Never go below 8 PSI without true beadlock wheels — you risk unseating the tire from the rim which is dangerous and expensive.

Beadlock capable ≠ true beadlock — the XR Recon wheels on my Rubicon are beadlock capable (they can accept a beadlock ring) but are not full beadlocks from the factory. I stay at 12 PSI minimum without the ring installed.

Air down before you hit the trail, not after you’re stuck — lower pressure prevents getting stuck in the first place. Don’t wait until you’re already spinning to remember to air down.

Check all four corners — it’s easy to do three and forget one. Walk the whole vehicle every time.


Frequently Asked Questions

What PSI should I run my Jeep Wrangler off road? For rock crawling on a Jeep Wrangler with 35-37″ tires, most wheelers run 10-15 PSI. I run 12 PSI on my Rubicon with 37″ Nitto Trail Grapplers. For mud, go slightly higher at 14-18 PSI to prevent the tire from folding under heavy side loads.

Can I air down too much without beadlocks? Yes — without true beadlock wheels, going below 8-10 PSI risks unseating the tire bead from the rim, especially under heavy side loads on rocks. Beadlock capable wheels (like the XR Recon) are better than standard wheels at low pressure but still have limits without the locking ring installed.

Does tire pressure affect fuel economy? Yes — underinflated tires on the street increase rolling resistance and reduce fuel economy. The chalk test helps you find the minimum safe street pressure that maximizes both wear and economy.

What’s the right tire pressure for sand dunes in a SxS? For sand, go as low as you safely can — 8-12 PSI for a UTV on sand helps the tire float on top rather than dig in. If you have beadlocks you can go lower. Always check manufacturer minimums for your specific tire.

How do I know when to air back up? Any time you’re returning to paved roads or driving above 45 MPH. Low tire pressure at highway speeds generates heat, increases wear dramatically, and reduces handling. Always air back up before getting on the highway.


The Bottom Line

Getting your offroad tire pressure dialed in is free performance. Airing down costs nothing but a few minutes and gives you dramatically more traction, better ride quality, and fewer stuck situations on the trail. The chalk test costs a piece of sidewalk chalk and gives you confidence that your street pressure is dialed in for your specific setup.
